About Me

Me in the BCA greenhouse with a tray of cuttings.
My name is Steve. I live in Maidenhead, Berkshire, with my wife and two young children. Before setting up Green Steve's, I spent more than 20 years working in journalism and PR. In the summer of 2020, in the midst of another COVID lockdown, I came to the realization that I wanted to do something different with my life.
I've always loved gardening and being outdoors and, since coming to live in Maidenhead about 10 years ago, have spent virtually all my spare time pottering around the garden or down at the allotment with the kids. In February 2021 I quit my job doing PR for a well-known car manufacturer and set up Green Steve's, taking on small jobs for friends, family and neighbours. Since then I haven't looked back.

In September of that year I enrolled as a student at Berkshire College of Agriculture (BCA) to undertake a Diploma in Horticulture from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), which I completed in the summer of 2022. It was a tough course, but I am so proud and pleased that I completed it.
The RHS Diploma gave me a very good theoretical and practical understanding of horticulture and the ability to study and socialise with like-minded people. It also gave me a lot of confidence in my new business venture. It's one thing to work in your own garden, but quite another when you're working and being paid to work in someone else's.

I have two cats, Kevin & Perry, as well as a mad Cocker Spaniel called Casper. When I'm not gardening for clients, I'm either down at the allotment, cooking, or listening to music on vinyl. I love everything from jazz and blues, to hip-hop, classic rock and indie. I also like writing, current affairs, real ale and red wine.

So...anyway, that's just a little bit about me. Feel free to follow me on Instagram if you want to know or see more - it's where I post stuff about what I get up to day to day.
